What is Distance Education?
Distance Education is any learning that takes place with the instructor and student separated from each other by geographic distance or by time, often supported by communications technology such as videotape, television, computers, Internet, or mail.

Distance Education @ UNO
At UNO Distance Education is delivered via three different modalities: Internet courses, Virtual World courses, and compressed video courses.

Internet Courses
Take advantage of our growing number of courses delivered via the Internet, so you can study anytime, anywhere. Internet courses provide most or all of their content outside of the regular classroom via web pages. Often these courses utilize an online course delivery system such as Blackboard. In addition, CD-ROM or web-based textbooks with links to various web sites enhance Internet courses.

Virtual World Courses
Virtual world courses are taught via the 3-D virtual world, Second Life, on UNO's virtual campus. These classes requires students to create virtual identities or avatars and attend virtual class in real time using synchronous audio.

Compressed Video Courses

Compressed Video courses require attendance at specially equipped classrooms around Louisiana. The classes are taught from a designated campus, or originating site. Students at remote classroom sites can interact with students at other remote classrooms along with the instructor via television.
